Burton RFC have been asked to produce another display of patience and self belief for their fixture away to Kenilworth by director of rugby Steve Smith.
After last weekend’s impressive win against Hereford – the Crofters’ sixth win in as many matches – Smith expects much of the same from his side as they take on a Kenilworth side with one win in their last three matches.
With competition for places also hotting up, Smith has the unenviable job of choosing a starting XV from a talented squad.
“We had a quality front five display against Hereford,” said Smith.
“Our dominance in the scrum was as good as it’s been all season and the lads have set the bar high to continue to keep it that way.
“But I’m confident they can do it.
“With players like Ian Gilmour (pictured) and Will Brooks, we have good depth in the squad, and with several players still injured we can look forward to them returning and giving us even greater strength in depth.
“The whole squad is looking forward to Kenilworth away.
“We’re not worrying about them – we’re merely concentrating on our own game and aiming to stick to what we do best – being dynamic and direct.”
Whilst Smith is content with the squad he has, he also said how former player Alex Gray – now a coach with league leaders Lichfield, who Burton play next Saturday – will be wary of the threat Burton pose, as he watched the Crofters’ win on Saturday.
“Lichfield must also be worried about the threat in the league we are becoming,” said Smith.
“Alex Grey coming back to his old playing home to watch a dominant display may give him food for thought prior to the match a week on Saturday.
“We dominated easily during the first 40 minutes in a lot of areas.
“Despite us having three players sent to the sin bin, we still worked hard with what we had.
“We’re hoping he’ll be slightly concerned by this.”
A similar side is expected for the trip to Glasshouse Lane, with Harry Titley retaining the full-back role which earned him man of the match.
Burton A host Bournville 2nds at Peel Croft, kick-off 3pm, hoping to build on their 17-5 victory over Hereford 2nds.
Probable 1st XV: Murphy, Burrough, Tivey, Cartwright (C), Roach, Ed Henry, Briggs, Dutton, Banton, Peach, Benjamin, Betty, Archer, Boden, Titley. Subs: Brooks, Bradley, Gilmour..
