ASHBY town centre and its surrounding areas are due to get a spring clean next week, when the town hosts its first Big Tidy Up event.

Volunteers will scour the town for litter to clear in a two-and-a-half-hour push to create a nicer and more pleasant environment for all involved.

It is hoped that most areas will be covered throughout the event, which takes place on Saturday, March 15.

Marie Eccleston, of Ashby Carpets, who is behind the initiative, said: “We’ll decide on work areas based on where the volunteers live, and they will work their way from there back to Hood Park for tea and coffee.

“It’s a community event, and it really does bring people together.

“It’s about community and just doing what we are all capable of.”

The tidy up has been taking place on a smaller scale for several years.

It started when Mrs Eccleston, who runs the store with her family, decided to appeal for people to help tidy the areas around the shop, on Smisby Road.

When somebody suggested they widen it out, she jumped at the chance.

“It’s lovely. We’ve had people as young as four and older than 80 taking part,” she added.

Those who are unable to collect the rubbish can help with refreshments.

Locations are scattered around the town, and the Rotary Club of Ashby Castle will be collecting along the bypass. Teams can eb made up of adults only, mixed ages, or families. Those taking part do not have to live in Ashby.

North West Leicestershire District Council and Ashby Town Council are also involved.

Ashby’s Big Tidy Up will begin at 2pm and end at 4.30pm.
