Being asked to be a bridesmaid is a huge honour, but it's a role which comes with lots of responsibility, so make sure you choose the right person for the job!
Traditionally, it seems the role of bridesmaid wasn’t nearly as important as it is today and the primary motivation for including bridesmaids in a wedding ceremony used to be in order to prevent evil spirits from knowing who the bride was! Nowadays however, bridesmaids and in particular a Maid of Honour are indispensable to the bride in the run up to the wedding day.
In accepting the position of Maid of Honour you are principally agreeing to play a role in the wedding ceremony, however in recent times the role has come to entail much more.
This means being awarded the role of chief bridesmaid now comes with many expectations as she will become the bride’s rock; there to assist and offer valuable advice and support as she plans her big day.
Nevertheless, all bridesmaids are significant to the bride and are obviously valued as they have been chosen to be part of her special day. They will be called upon to provide a support base during a very stressful time and are also there to bring her back down to earth during any ‘bridezilla’ moments!
While as a bride you might consider it odd to not be the one to choose your own bridesmaids, in past times it certainly wasn’t the case; the bride’s family would be the ones to make the selection because a large group of bridesmaids would show off a family’s wealth and social status.
This is vastly different from modern society as today a bride may choose her number of bridesmaids due to factors such as the size of her family and group of friends, her individual preferences or by the number of attendants that the groom would like.
Being asked to be a bridesmaid is a huge honour and so it is important to make the most of it and enjoy all aspects that come with the role.
When it comes to the role itself, the perfect bridesmaid should be helpful, thoughtful and caring and most importantly always be available for a wedding related shopping trip! In being a bridesmaid you will be the bride’s personal assistant, helping with anything from organising dress fittings and hair appointments to helping to select a venue for the big day.
And let’s not forget the most important task of the bridesmaids; that of organising a momentous hen party. This should be a fun, exciting, and memorable send off into married-life for the bride, celebrating the end of her days as a single woman.
Finally though the big day will come around and it’s time to fulfil your primary bridesmaids task, so take time to think of yourself and ensure you have everything you need to enjoy the day as well as remembering the bride’s emergency kit!
