STAFFORDSHIRE Fire and Rescue Service has issued a warning to people who are thinking about using a barbecue during the summer months.

A spokesman for the service said: "Barbecues have to be one of the best ways of celebrating the good weather and socialising and, when it's sunny, barbecues are never too far away.

"Make sure you stay safe this summertime and remember to look when you cook."

The service also released tips on its website about staying safe when cooking outdoors.

They include:

Never leave a lit barbecue unattended;

Make sure your barbecue is well away from sheds, fences, trees, shrubs and garden waste;

Only light a barbecue with recognised fuels and not petrol or white spirit; and

When cooking on a barbecue, always keep water nearby incase of an emergency.

Anyone in charge of using a barbecue is urged to not drink too much alcohol.
