AS firefighters in East Staffordshire prepare to take further industrial action, the county's chief fire officer is reminding residents to test their smoke alarms.

Peter Dartford has also issued a plea for those in the borough to take extra care during the strikes, which begin on August 9.

Firefighters will walk out between noon and 2pm and 10.59pm and 11.59pm each day, up to and including Saturday, August 16. It will be the 11th time they have taken action over changes proposed by the Government to their pensions.

Mr Dartford said: "I would like to reassure residents that we will have robust contingency plans in place and will continue to provide an emergency response to all life-threatening situations. We will also answer all 999 calls.
