A CHARITY in Burton will be giving away sofas to people in need of help at a two-day event this weekend.
The Star Foundation, in Queen Street, is handing out dozens of sofas for free to people who are able to come and collect them.
There will be a small charge for anybody who wants the sofa – or suite, depending on their needs – delivering to their home.
Pete Tryner, from the Star Foundation, said: "We get so many good sofas and chairs sent in to us. Rather than see them go to waste in landfill, we would like to see a family come along and get something that's needed.
"All of the pieces of furniture are fine, as anything which is scrap we send out for recycling."
It is the third year the charity has run the sofa giveaway, and it has grown in popularity each time.
When volunteers tentatively opened the doors for the first year, they had no idea if anybody would come. But after 20 sofas disappeared throughout the day, it was clear the giveaway would be a success.
"We want to do what we can to help, particularly in this economic climate," Mr Tryner told the Mail.
The giveaway will run at the Queen Street base on Friday and Saturday.
