DERBY County head coach Steve McClaren has paid tribute to the club’s medical team for the way they dealt with a “frightening” situation involving young striker Mason Bennett.

The 17-year-old was carried off after only 11 minutes of Sunday’s FA Youth Cup tie against Newcastle United following a sickening clash of heads.

Bennett was taken to hospital for precautionary scans and discharged Sunday night.

He was back at Derby’s training ground yesterday and will be monitored closely this week.

He is out of tonight’s clash against Sheffield Wednesday at Hillsborough, kick-off 7.45pm.

McClaren watched the youth cup tie from the stand.

“It was a bad clash of heads and for a while Mason was having a fit (convulsions). That was really scary and something I have not seen on a football field before,” said McClaren.

“You have to give great credit to our medical team.

“They were straight on, they got him in the recovery position and stabilised the affect of what could have been a bad situation.

“Credit to them for dealing with what was a frightening moment, not just for the player but for everybody watching, especially his family who were there.”
