Study reveals ‘no crime’ rape stats

Assistance Chief Constable Nick Baker said such attacks only make up a ‘miniscule’ percentage of reported rapes.

He said: “There is this image of a stranger attacking in the dark.

“But that’s a miniscule percentage - rapes are far more complex than that.

“Often, the victim knows the offender, there are also issues around consent and issues around historical reporting.”

Ast Chief Con Baker appealed for anyone who has been a victim, or who needed help, to always speak out to the police.

He said: “Our over-arching issue is that we want victims to have trust in us.

“They should not be frightened to come and speak to us.”
