THE latest Derek’s Tree appeal has been the best year yet with the generosity of shoppers helping disadvantaged children and young adults around Burton.
The campaign which ran for just four weeks provided children with a gift to open on Christmas Day thanks to founder, Derek Liddle, who set up the appeal with the support of the Burton Business Club, his many volunteers and sponsors as well as Burton shoppers.
Derek Liddle said: “Since my wife and I began the appeal 18 years ago, it has grown dramatically and there are now several of us who volunteer. It has once again been a great success with so many people purchasing gifts.I have been overwhelmed by the generosity and warmth of people this year and can’t believe the quality of gifts that have been brought in. We have had people come and give cash, companies give boxes of gifts and individual shoppers donate wonderful toys.
“The donations are appreciated by the young people. We had one teenager ask for a pair of socks as the ones she owned had holes in and gave her blisters. Thanks to the appeal, she received six new pairs.”
