A NEW Council Tax support scheme is being launched in North West Leicestershire.
The scheme will replace Council Tax Benefit which has been abolished by the government as part of sweeping welfare reforms and will start on April 1.
The government has also cut by £586,000 the amount the council receives to help pay for benefits.
For claimants in North West Leicestershire, it means anyone of working age will have to pay at least 8.5 per cent of their Council Tax bill.
Councillor Nick Rushton, portfolio holder for corporate services, said: “These changes to the way in which Council Tax support is provided has meant taking some very difficult decisions.
“Our aim was to provide a scheme which was as fair as possible, would support the most vulnerable members of our community, provide value for money and protect other services.”
