VISITORS travelling by taxi to and from East Midlands Airport will be bouyed by news that most vehicles were found to be in good condition thanks to a spot check.
The joint exercise, organised by North West Leicestershire District Council’s licensing department and Leicestershire Police, found that 77 out of the 96 vehicles checked were free of defects.
Of those vehicles with defects, nothing serious was detected.
Advice was given in nine cases of tyre wear, nine bulb defects, two windscreen wiper defects and one cracked windscreen.
Councillor Alison Smith, deputy leader and portfolio holder for community services at North West Leicestershire District Council, said: “When people use taxis, they quite rightly expect to be travelling in a safe vehicle, and it’s up to the drivers to make sure their taxis are up to scratch.
“This exercise offers advice to drivers, who may not have noticed a defect, but also lets them know that they can be fined or prosecuted if their vehicles aren’t maintained properly.”
