A TEENAGER who drank ten pints of lager and spat at police officers was branded ‘disgraceful’ by magistrates.

Jack Copland, 18, of Swan Lane, Abbots Bromley pleaded guilty at Burton Magistrates’ Court to a charge of being drunk and disorderly in a public place, and criminal damage.

Emma Thompson, prosecuting, said he launched an expletive ridden tirade at police at 10pm on November 29 after two officers were called to an incident at St Nicholas Way.

She said: “He was handcuffed and placed in the back of the police van where he continued his torrent of abuse towards the officers, threatening to spit in their faces. They had to wait for a carrier to arrive and while they were waiting he was spitting all over the cage in the police van.

“The next day he said he could not recall anything. He had been out at a friend’s party and had drunk ten pints of lager.”

Defending, Rebecca Dawson, said: “He is extremely sorry and, to put it bluntly, did act like an idiot.

“He lives at home and his nan has come to court with him. He is ashamed of the fact that he has had to bring his nan to court.”

Unemployed Copland will have to pay compensation and court costs amounting to £401.47. Head magistrate Charles Theaker told him: “Swearing in the disgusting way you did and having to have a police cage sent is a disgraceful example of behaviour.”
