TEENAGERS in South Derbyshire have been spending their summer holidays helping out charities in the community.

The 16 to 18 year-olds have been enrolled in the four -week national citizen service programme with Derby College, which involves fund-raising and working for a variety of charities and organisations of their choice as part of a social action project.

The group have been supporting Melbourne based charity Me and Dee, which aims to create special memories for the terminally ill, as well as supporting oncology wards at hospitals across both Derybshire and Staffordshire.

Group leader Lauren Hawkins said: "The national citizen service proves that young can be energetic, passionate and considerate individuals and the service really allows them to expose this to the community."
