TEN rowers from Trent Rowing Club have taken part in the National Schools Regatta – with two boats qualifying for the finals at the prestigious event.

The regatta, held at the National Water Sports Centre in Nottingham over the bank holiday weekend, is the biggest junior rowing event of the year

It takes place over three days and attracts the best athletes from all over the country.

And Lucy Holgate showed she can mix it with the best as she stormed into the final of the Junior 15 Single Sculls.

Junior co-ordinator Emma Holgate said: “Lucy had an amazing trial and qualified for the semi-final in third place.

“She then went on to her semi-final, where she finished second, qualifying for the final at the end of the day.

“Unfortunately, she didn’t win a medal, but for someone who usually rows in a quad, this was an incredible achievement in her first national outing as a single sculler.”

Scott Smith also took part in the J15 Single Sculls and rowed well, falling just 1.5 seconds short of a semi-final berth – recording a time which put him in the top half of his age group.

The day after the single events, Trent’s rowers again stood out in the team races.

Lucy Fielding and Lucy McQuoney raced as a double in the J16 age group.

Despite a good effort in their time trial they also missed out on a spot in the semi-finals.

On the Sunday, three more crews took to the water – J16 single Oli Benton, a J18 quad of Lucy McQuoney, Kellie Hathaway, Lucy Fielding and Anna Cresswell and a J16 quad of Jade Smith, Jess Gilbert, Lucy Holgate and Jazmine Smith.

All had good time trials and did well to qualify for their semi-finals, but only the J16 girls went on to qualify for the final.

In a strong field, they had another good race and finished fifth, a massive improvement on their 14th place last year.

As a reward for reaching the finals at such an important regatta, Holgate, Gilbert and the Smiths are going to be competing at this year’s Women’s Henley Regatta on June 20-22.

“It’s a challenge they are extremely excited about,” said Emma Holgate.
