A 25-YEAR-OLD Burton woman has appeared in court to deny two charges of assault.

Leann Smith, of Branston Road, attended Burton Magistrates’ Court to plead not guilty to attacking Raza Manzoor on July 27 in Branston.

Describing the circumstances of the alleged attack, John Peel, prosecuting, claimed the defendant kicked Mr Manzoor’s body before walking away.

However, Vaughn Whistance, defending, said he contested the prosecutor’s version of events.

Nevertheless, he said he agreed with Mr Peel that the case was suitable to be tried at magistrates’ court, and the bench agreed.

Smith told the court she wanted to be tried there rather than at Stafford Crown Court.

Presiding magistrate Peter Rolfe, sitting with one colleague, released the defendant on unconditional bail and ordered her to re-appear at the court tomorrow for her trial date to be fixed.
