THE body of a young male has been pulled from the River Trent in what police have called 'a tragic accident'.
Specialist fire crews from Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service retrieved the body after a canoeist made the grisly discovery on Friday evening in the river near Meadow Lane, off Burton Bridge.
Inspector Paul Downing said police are now trying to establish the person's identity and the circumstances surrounding the man's death.
A statement from Staffordshire Police said the person is believed to be from the Burton area and his death 'appears to be a tragic accident'.
The coroner has been notified and a post-mortem examination will be carried out.
Detective Sergeant Ian Fitzgerald said there are no reports of any missing people and the death is not being treated as suspicious.
Anyone with information should call Burton CID or DS Fitzgerald on 101 and quote incident number 582 of May 10 2013.
