UTTOXETER Road Runner Rob Hall battled in vain to defend his title at the Xtreme Challenge at Catton Hall near Burton.
The 10k event, consisting of a two-lap circuit made up of steep gradients, deadly declines, man-made obstacles, tunnels, 12ft hay bales and icy water, attracted a field of 200.
And Hall was forced to settle for fifth spot after clocking 39.54. The race was won by Tanausu Castellano in a superb time of 36.58.
Hall said: “I didn’t do too badly as I’ve been off for three months with an injury. The electric fence under the cargo nets was a nice surprise, although I did start to worry when my hands were still green after 45 minutes”
Uttoxeter Road Runners also sent a squad of 10 to the popular Alsager 5 who were leg home by Owen Barron in 31.28.
Catherine Turner was first female Road Runner over the line in 38.15. Other runners to complete the course were: Grahame Cope (34.14); Spike Millican (37.31); Honor Cann (38.16); Keith Goss (39.15); Sue Barron (41.03); Lisa Lancaster (47.33); Kay Swingewood (47.34); Liz Goodwin (49.28); Phil Cooper (53.13)
