THE top cop in South Derbyshire has urged people to make sure homes and sheds are secure following a recent spate of crimes in the area.

Nigel Lidsey, section inspector for Derbyshire Police, spoke to the Mail after a dwelling burglary, in Ashby Road, Woodville, and several shed break-ins, in Woodville Road, Hartshorne, took place over the weekend.

He said: “This is again something that can be prevented and, as we head towards spring, will be a crime that will become more prevalent.

“We just as people to make sure the shed is a good and solid build and not dilapidated.

“Make sure the shed lock is a good one with concealed screws and secured by a metal plate behind the door.

“Make sure all property is security marked such as bikes, lawnmowers and even garden furniture.

“We are performing well in terms of crime but we are having issues with small, patchy problems.

“A lot of them come down to opportunist thieves. I understand that people are busy and sometimes things slip their minds but some extra vigilance could mean the difference between someone committing a crime.”
