BUSINESS has been hit at a shopping parade in Burton with owners having to contend with a water leak which has finally been fixed more than a month after being reported.
A leak in Dover Court, off Horninglow Road, sent water gushing into shops - causing a headache for the businesses which have been affected.
Rauf Akbar’s Carpet Stop, along with Sew n Sew and Angelos Chippy, are among units to have been blighted by the leak.
He said: “It has been over five weeks since it was first reported to the water company.
“There has been quite a lot of water running through the back door. It has affected my deliveries, we have to be extra careful with where we put the carpets.”
Linda Fidler, who owns fancy dress store Sew n Sew, said: “It’s running like a little stream. There’s mud out the back and we’ve been having to paddle through it to get to our properties.
“It happened two years ago, so it’s probably the same bit of pipe.”
Workers finally started work to fix the leak yesterday but Mrs Fidler is also concerned that she was going to be left with the bill.
She said: “We’re maintenance free, meaning we have to pay for maintenance and as a shop we’re metred so we’re wondering who is going to pay for all the used water. We just hope it’s not us.”
A spokesman for South Staffordshire Water said: “A team visited Dover Court to investigate a water leak. They found that the leak was coming from pipework that was the property, and so the responsibility, of the landlord.
“In instances like this, we are able to issue notice to property owners to inform them of their responsibilities and request that they make repairs.”
