YOUNGSTERS in Burton waved goodbye to the summer holidays with some water-related fun.
In spite of having to cancel two river sessions early in the summer due to the state of the River Trent, 62 youngsters from the Burton area have enjoyed lots of opportunities to develop their canoe skills over the past few months thanks to the Burton Venture Trust.
The trust's activity leader Graham Marshment said: "Every youngster who wants to canoe with the trust must first demonstrate their swimming ability and then undergo capsize and rescue training at an indoor pool before they start canoeing.
"We then start them off on inland lakes and then move on to the river, where we they can rapidly develop their skills.
"This summer we have been working with five groups of different abilities and all of them have gained confidence very quickly.
"Many of our canoeists have gained awards to record their skills and achievements.
"Thanks to the trust's canoe staff we have been able to provide lots of varied canoeing activities for all the groups, with the emphasis always on being safe and at the same time having fun."
The trust is always on the lookout for new members to join.
