Western Power Distribution report a dramatic drop in energy usage during 'lights out'

AS homes across the Midlands turned out their lights to commemorate the centenary of the start of the First World War, the region saw a dramatic drop in electricity usage.

Western Power Distribution reported that electricity usage in the West Midlands dropped by 55 megawatts during 'lights out' on Monday – the equivalent of five million energy-saving light bulbs.

The East Midlands meanwhile saw a decline in usage of 29 megawatts or 2.5 million low-energy light bulbs.
