A night of whooping and hollering

A WHOOPING, a hollering, a wailing and the occasional scream of “I love you Lachie” was the order of the evening on Tuesday — and that was just me.

Velvet jackets, crisp white shirts, bow ties and oh so tight trousers—it could only be The Overtones who were gracing the stage at Nottingham Concert Hall.

It’s impossible not be impressed by Britain’s hottest doo wop group and as much as I enjoyed last year’s show — I’m not stalking them, honest — Tuesday night was bordering perfection.

Backed by their four-piece band, the mellifluous harmonies of the quintet were simply sublime.

However, the booming baritone of Australian beefcake, Lachie Chapman, was the icing on an already tasty cake.

I almost swooned at his rendition of Unforgettable which has to be one of the best interpretations of the song since Nat King Cole recorded it way back in 1951.

Chapman’s booming voice absolutely melts me everytime I hear it, almost taking my breath away — is it very noticable that I have a massive crush on him?

The Overtones show is an evening of pure entertainment and joy with the group interlacing selected tracks from their two albums — Good Ol’ Fashioned Love and Higher.

There was effortless flow from song to song, polished vocals and choreography, with an interjection of cheesy humour.

The fab five have taken their audience to their hearts and love nothing more than to interact with absolutely no qualms about fans dancing in the aisles or taking photographs.

The finale came far too soon — although they had been on stage for almost two hours — with a personal favourite of mine, Gambling Man, followed by Loving the Sound, the first single released from their second album.

The group’s sound has evolved since the early days of their career with a more contemporary feel which they execute perfectly.

They manage to interweave old classics such as Goodnight Sweetheart with upbeat covers of more recent hits including an impressive version of Cee Lo Green’s Forget You.

The Overtones are a well-oiled machine who aren’t an overnight success — they have learned their craft over a number of years by sheer hard work and determination.
