At long last Wolverhampton now has a regular Saturday night Comedy Club thanks to ex stockbroker turned professional comedian Damion Larkin. He’s put together a stellar line up of top TV comedy names to headline his Laugh Out Loud Comedy Club housed at The Slade Rooms on Broad St.
Already going strong in other cities Damion has big plans for the comedy club locally, “I’m hoping the people of Wolverhampton will get behind it so it can become a permanent fixture for the city which no-one’s really managed to achieve so far”.
Damion says “I’m so excited that we’ve got such a strong line up for the first season. I’ve established comedy clubs in other places and have had likes of Jason Manford, Sarah Millican and John Bishop perform for us before they were famous. This latest crop of recruits comprise seasoned headliners who already been on TV plus shooting stars making waves on the circuit and I’ve no doubt they’ll go on to be household names too.”
He should know as he’s performed at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival for the last seven years: Winning the label ‘One of the Top Ten Shows on the Fringe’ (The Skinny) and appearing at the Melbourne International Comedy Festival and around the world in Sydney, New York, LA, Singapore, Hong Kong and even Jersey.
Larkin himself was a runner up in ‘North West Comedian of the Year’ in 2007 “Two of my friends from Southport came to watch but left quickly at the end - probably so they didn’t have to see me crying!” This followed success in the BBC’s New Comedy Award in 2005 who dubbed him “One of the country’s top new comedians”.
With all this success we asked Damion what’s brought him to Wolverhampton, “Some people knock it but I like the people in Wolverhampton, they’re warm and friendly and have a cracking sense of humour so I want to do something they can enjoy. Plus I think the city needs a Saturday night Comedy Club so people have somewhere to go that’s a right good laugh. It starts at 8pm and will be done by 10.30pm so it’s the perfect mood booster before a night out on the town!”.
Each show will have 3 different comedians and MC Damion Larkin and if you can’t make Sept 6 be sure to check out the other dates for 2013 at www.theatkinson.co.uk/must-see.
Headlining the next show on Sept 6th is top Canadian comedian and TV regular, Daliso Chaponda “More laughs than many comedians get in an entire year” Channel 4.
