GREAT Britain rower Laura Wheeler won the top award at the 27th East Staffordshire Sports Scholarship Awards – held at Burton Albion’s Pirelli Stadium.

In total, 59 elite performers across 22 different sports were awarded a scholarship for achievements during 2013, including the likes of Burton Rugby Club, Trent Rowing Club, Burton Kickboxing Academy and Rolleston Cricket Club.

Wheeler, who has her sights set on a place with the Great Britain squad at the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, was named Sports Personality of the Year.

Wheeler has risen to the top over the past two years, and during 2013 was selected to become a full time athlete with the GB Rowing squad.

In the summer, the 28-year-old was part of the GB squad for the home World Cup event at Eton Dorney.

Councillor Robert Hardwick, deputy leader for cultural services said: “I would like to offer my congratulations to all our local sports stars and I wish them every success for the future.

“There are a host of elite sport performers in East Staffordshire and the awards, and the resulting grants, show how important building a sporting legacy in East Staffordshire is to the Council.”

All the winners received a grant, and a free training pass for all East Staffordshire Borough Council leisure facilities.

The grants distributed amounted to over £8,000, made possible due to the continued support of the East Staffordshire Borough Council, East Staffordshire Sports Council, Burton Albion, Consolidated Charities of Burton, J&O Lloyd Trust, Star Foundation, Trent & Dove Housing and Reddoor Studios.
