BURTON RFC have begun their summer recruitment with the addition of promising front row forward George Wild.
The Crofters earned promotion to National League Three Midlands after beating Derby in the Midlands One play-off, and know they need to strengthen the squad for the step up.
“We’ve got a couple of players signed on for next season,” said director of rugby Steve Smith. “George is a tight-head prop who has a very high-calibre CV, and was playing for Nottingham University’s first team.
“And hopefully we’ll have another couple of guys signed by the end of the month.
“There’s been a lot going on off the field as well to strengthen the squad and improve facilities at Peel Croft.”
Smith admitted he was “gutted” to have missed the promotion decider at Peel Croft earlier this month.
The coach was unable to attend as he had a long-standing commitment to a charity bike ride.
“I was gutted I couldn’t be at the play-off final, but it was just one of those things - I had booked it 18 months ago, and as it was me who arranged the whole thing, I didn’t feel like I could bow out,” said Smith.
“It was great for the lads, who did so well. I never doubted that they’d win it if they played to their ability.
“There were five or six lads who may have moved on if we hadn’t got promoted, so that is an added bonus for us as a club.”
PEEL Croft will host a match between Staffordshire and a combined Nottinghamshire, Lincolnshire and Derbyshire side this weekend, kick-off 3pm.
The Staffs squad has yet to be decided, but Crofters Ken Archer, Joe Gazzard and Liam Hucknall are likely to be among those included.
