MEMBERS of a South Derbyshire swimming club have raised £450 for Meningitis Research.

The group, who are all part of the Etwall Eagles club, each swam five miles at Etwall Leisure Centre.

It was the idea of 13-year-old Beth Willetts, from Faraday Avenue in Stretton, who wanted to do something to show support to a close family friend, Caroline Wakelin.

Caroline lost her daughter May to meningitis when she was just 18 months old. Beth was the same age at the time.

The swimmers presented the cheque to Caroline, who was unaware of their fund-raising efforts.

The de Ferrers Academy pupil said: “Caroline has always been raising money for Meningitis Research and I just wanted to do something to help out.

“She’s always been there for both me and my family when I was growing up and has been supportive towards us.

“Hopefully we’ll do something in the future so that we can also keep on raising money for charity.”
