TEENAGERS in North West Leicestershire are being offered the chance to get behind the wheel this summer.

A series of "pre-driver" courses organised by Leicestershire County Council are designed to give youngsters, who have not yet started to learn, experience of what it is like to drive a car.

The courses include a mix of theory and practical driving and participants will receive an introduction to the highway code, hazard perception and speed awareness and a safety briefing from Leicestershire Fire and Rescue Service.

Following some time in the classroom, practical sessions will then be held on the race track at Mallory Park.

The council's cabinet member for highways and transport, Peter Osborne, said: "Often it can be a nerve-racking experience when you first learn to drive and these sessions will help to give them confidence when they first start to learn and an appreciation of the dangers that driving without care and attention can bring."

Anyone interested in taking part can book their place on the course by visiting the website www.tjunction.org.uk.
