A box of tricks proves to be a magical discovery
by ANDY PARKER
A DUSTY box discovered in a Burton attic has given a glimpse of how people entertained themselves in the 1920s.
Antiques expert Charles Hanson, who made the find, opened the box to discover it contained a full set of 'magic tricks' from an era that predated the advent of Walt Disney.
Mr Hanson said: "The box was covered in dust when I unearthed it, but the contents really are something to marvel at. It is complete with all 21 magic tricks within their colourful 1920s packaging. Children would have been delighted to have opened up such a cabinet of tricks almost 90 years ago."
The box of magic (pictured left) dates to the time of the discovery of Tutankamun and was designed by Edwardian magician Ernest Sewell, whose entertainments were presented at Windsor Castle before members of the Royal Family.
Conjuring tricks in the box include the 'Hindoo slave bangle' and the 'enchanted ball bag'.
Mr Hanson said: "We expect the box to sell for up to £100 - it is very evocative from a grand childhood and we expect keen competition for it.
"Its value is in it really being so complete and so well looked after - we can only wonder who the young magician was."
The box will go under the hammer at an auction at the Mackworth Hotel, in Derby, on Thursday, April 24, with viewing from 10am to 7pm on Tuesday, April 22.
