Winshill sides battling it out
JUNIOR FOOTBALL
IT IS looking good for Winshill in INCHCAPE KIA YOUTH LEAGUE DIVISION ONE, with Winshill A sitting pretty at the top, closely followed by Winshill Gold, writes BRIAN JONES.
Fellow title hopefuls Marlborough Rovers were the latest team to suffer at the hands of Winshill A as they went down 5- 2 and surrendered their 100 per cent record.
The league leaders’ current run of success is all the more creditable because they are an under- 16 team playing against boys up to two years older.
Captain Aaron Carvell (2) and Paul Rogers put them 3-0 up before Daniel Kilduff’s unstoppable free-kick reduced the deficit.
Jordan Stevens struck twice in the second half to make it 5-1 and wrap up victory, though substitute Shayak Miah did pull another goal back for Rovers late on.
Barton Rovers improved their position at the expense of opponents Whittington Cougars by virtue of a 5-1 win. Tom Anderson (2), Costas Marcou (2) and Andrew Chambers outscored Cougars’ Lloyd Dunet.
Repton Casuals White took full advantage of the absence of YOUTH LEAGUE DIVISION TWO leaders TS Sports from action this week to move to the top of the table thanks to a 5-2 victory at Midway.
Jordan Mason’s hat-trick had support from Luke Morris and Sam Parker to outscore the efforts of Midway’s Daryl Dicken and Edward Roe.
The nine men of Ashby Ivanhoe just failed to grab a deserved point as they went down 2-1 at home to Winshill Green, with substitute Johnny Bridgett’s two goals overcoming the lone reply from Ashby’s Marcus White.
James Crutchley’s hat-trick proved decisive as Doveridge came away from Rolleston with a 3-0 win.
In a replay of last week’s cup encounter, Stretton Swifts once again defeated opponents St Georges by the exact same margin of 7-1 — and the lone scorer for the losers was once again Jonathan Taylor.
Swifts’ scorers were slightly different this time, with their goals coming from Nathan McNeela (2), Grant Warrier (2), James Eames, Darren Willday and Warren Brown.
The INCHCAPE KIA YOUTH LEAGUE KNOCKOUT CUP match between the Division Two leaders TS Sports and Fulford & Tean, bottom of Division One, ended in an emphatic 7-1 win for the former.
Elliott Ross hit five of Sports’ seven, with Craig Bennett and Jack Davies also on target.
Daniel Eyre scored Fulford’s consolation effort.
Heather Juniors closed the gap on the leaders in FOCUS DIY UNDER-16 DIVISION ONE with a 3-1 win at Stretton Eagles. Scott Harrison (2) and Ashley Poyser did the damage for Heather in answer to Eagles’ Tom Reilly.
Just nine points cover the whole of UNDER-16 DIVISION TWO, with Stretton Swifts securing their position as leaders with a 6-2 defeat of hosts Hatton Sports.
There were hat-tricks for Samuel Key and Alex Weir, while Hatton replied through Anoop Billen and Ibrar Mahmood.
Belvedere Park recorded their second successive 3-3 draw, this time against TS Sports. Luca Barlaba (2) and Kieran Found scored for Belvedere and Ashley Pegler (2) and Lewis Clarke for TS.
A Danny Jones hat-trick and goals from Sam Uncle and Jack Timms resulted in a 5-2 win for Newhall Tigers at Willington, though the match was much closer than the scoreline suggests.
Willington scored through Bradley Garner and Daniel Humenko and were only 2-1 down at half-time.
Newhall, however, have shored up their somewhat fragile defensive line and managed to withstand the pressure before hitting back to secure the points.
There were two matches played in the RUSHTON HICKMAN UNDER-16 KNOCKOUT CUP, and Barton Rovers and Rolleston both progressed to the semifinals.
The all-Division One clash saw Barton overcome Winshill B 2-0, with Michael Graves and Callum McBride on target.
Division One Rolleston travelled to Division Two Rocester Elkes Eagles and came away 6-2 winners. Samuel Ford scored a hat-trick and was supported by Stephen Dolby (2) and Jon Lovatt.
