FIREFIGHTERS have been called to tackle a large fire in South Derbyshire.

Crews from Swadlincote, Moira and Ashby fire stations were called at 12.35pm today (Wednesday, December 11) to the blaze on land off Occupation Lane, Woodville.

The crews found a pile of tyres around 10m by 10m, while a large plume of black smoke was prominent across the area. At the height of the fire, crews used two main jets and one hosereel jet to douse the flames.

The electricity supply in the surrounding area was cut for around an hour after engineers isolated the supply, with smoke billowing through overhead cables.

As of 3.30pm, one crew from Swadlincote remained at the scene damping down the area.
