Television auctioneer Charles Hanson is celebrating the birth of his son after a hospital scare. The South Derbyshire star of shows such as Bargain Hunt is on cloud nine after his wife Rebecca gave birth to a son, Frederick, three weeks ago.

But the delay in breaking the news has come about as it has not been plain sailing for the television personality and his wife, because their son has been intensive care since his birth after being born by Caesarian section at 32 weeks.

Problems began several months ago after it was discovered that the unborn baby would need blood transfusions while in the womb because of a pre-natal condition related to a rare antibody in the blood.

The couple travelled backwards and forwards to Birmingham for the transfusions, all the while under the care of the Royal Derby Hospital.

Mr Hanson, who run Hansons Auctioneers and Valuers in Heage Lane, Etwall, said: "The doctors said they couldn't do any more transfusions and as a result decided to bring Frederick into the world early.

"He is strong and a fighter and we had the best news this week when we were told he would be going into the high dependency unit because he had improved.

"I have been concerned not to say too much about the situation too soon and I am sure people will understand how cautious we have been about broadcasting the birth until we know things were improving.

"But I feel so optimistic and feel so blessed that we now have a son. After losing Tommy, who was born asleep in September 2012, we were overjoyed to have Matilda, who was born in 2014, and who has a calm and relaxed nature, just like my wife."
