EFFORTS to build nine homes on undeveloped land have been refused because it may harm the countryside.

J Braithwaite, of Breadsall, Derby, applied to South Derbyshire District Council for outline permission to build nine homes on land adjacent to Coalpit Lane, Coton in the Elms.

However, planners have refused to approve the plans, saying: "The development of the site in the manner proposed would result in a detached, unnatural and unsympathetic extension of the village into open countryside and would therefore be harmful to the intrinsic character and beauty of the open countryside and surrounding area.

"This sporadic detached characteristic of the site would also mean that, to access village facilities, pedestrians will be forced out on to the carriageway, where no pedestrian facilities exist, with the potential detriment to their safety."
