THE MP for South Derbyshire has played down reports of a row within the Conservative Party after Chancellor George Osborne was accused of saying the middle class ‘like paying the 40p tax rate’ in a meeting in which she was present.
Purported details of the meeting of the Private Members’ Committee were leaked, in which Mr Osborne is reported to have said that people like being in the higher tax band because ‘they feel they are a success’.
The comments were later criticised by some backbench MPs on the committee, with one Tory saying the 40p tax rate was ‘killing hard-working people who earn around £40,000’.
Heather Wheeler told the Mail ‘nobody likes paying tax’ but that she couldn’t remember ‘those specific words’ being said at the meeting.
Mrs Wheeler also quashed claims Tory MPs had subsequently been told to not to relay what was reportedly said.
She said: “Nobody has told me to keep quiet about anything. I can’t imagine where that has come from.”
