John Taylor pupils almost run over on walk to school

School pupils as young as 11 have been left fearing for their own safety as reckless drivers attempt to beat traffic chaos in the wake of the St Peter’s Bridge closure, it is claimed.

John Taylor High School students who take the bus from Walton have had several near-misses over the last few weeks as impatient motorists mount the pavement to overtake other drivers, according to parents.

Five-strong gang who 'targeted' Burton dog breeder have been jailed for theft of French bulldogs

A five-strong gang involved in the theft of pedigree French bulldogs worth at least £15,000 in total from the home of a Burton breeder have all received jail sentences.

Ten dogs worth around £1,500 each were stolen during two raids on the breeder’s home in Horninglow, Burton, in November last year, Stafford Crown Court heard.

Crew change over means St Peter’s Bridge work appears to stop for short period, says county council

Motorists have been reassured that work is taking place on St Peter’s Bridge is on target despite a small gap in the day when residents have reported that the structure appears silent.

Staffordshire County Council has told the Burton Mail that a “crew changeover” is the reason for when the bridge appears empty for a short period in the afternoon.

Inquest into death of Swadlincote woman, 93, opens after she died in mobility scooter crash

A 93-year-old retired Burton newsagent was involved in a collision with a car while on her mobility scooter, an inquest heard.

Dorothy Gertrude Upton was taken to Royal Derby Hospital on September 9 after being struck by the car on Alexandra Road in Swadlincote.

A man from Moira has been jailed for seven years for being part of a gang which supplied £145,000 worth of cocaine in a crime spree described by a Judge as a ‘substantial operation and conspiracy.’

Clive Andrews, of Cherry Tree Court, Moira, was one of six members of the drugs gang, who have been jailed for a total of more than 50 years.

All lanes on A38 are open as aftermath of car fire is revealed

A shocking image of the aftermath of the car fire on the A38 has been revealed. One lane of the A38 southbound was closed due to the fire.

The incident happened just before B6179 Derby Road and congestion was reported on A38 to A610 / B6441 Hartshay Hill.

The incident caused delays but all lanes have reopened.

Recovery work has now started but this is causing delays and one lane is closed, leading to queuing traffic between Alfreton and Derby.

Fire engines from Alfreton and Nottingham Road are currently on the major route southbound between Little Eaton and Coxbench.
