The A50 was closed in both directions after a "serious" crash involving two vehicles in South Derbyshire, it has been reported. An air ambulance has been called to the scene as well, it has been reported.
The crash happened on the eastbound carriageway shortly before 2.55pm between the junctions with the A6 for Derby and Alvaston and the A5132 for Swarkestone Bridge, Melbourne and Swadlincote.
A spokesman for East Midlands Ambulance Service said one person has been left with serious injuries but no-one else has been injured.
The spokesman said: “We received a call at 2.55pm to the A50 to reports of a two-vehicle road traffic collision. One person has suffered serious injuries.”
The Derbyshire, Leicestershire and Rutland Air Ambulance has also been called out to the scene.
Derbyshire police said the westbound carriageway had been closed to allow for the air ambulance to land amid reports of casualties. One lane of the westbound carriageway was later reopened. The eastbound carriageway is still closed.
A spokesman said: "We're attending reports of a serious collision on the A50. We were called to the A50 just before 3pm. The incident is on the eastbound carriageway but the westbound carriageway is also closed at this time while an air ambulance is at the scene.
"Please avoid the area as we expect this stretch of the A50 to be closed for some time. Witnesses are asked to call us on 101 quoting incident 571 of today."
Traffic monitoring service Inrix said that one vehicle has overturned.
The road closure is affecting traffic heading towards the M1, on Swarkestone Bridge, and the slip road for the A514. And is causing long tailbacks as people attempt to head home during the rush hour.
The ambulance service said one fast response paramedic, an ambulance and the air ambulance were all called to the accident.

A statement from Highways England earlier read: "The A50 is closed in both directions between the A38 (Toyota Island) and the A6 (Aston on Trent) due to a serious collision incident with a response being led by Derbyshire Police.
"Specifically, the westbound carriageway is closed from the A6 to its junction with the A514 (Chellaston), with the eastbound carriageway closure more extensive and this is from the A38 (Toyota Island) to the A6 (Aston on Trent).
"Police are diverting traffic via local routes and customers advised to expect delays in the area and to consider alternative routes."
