A Burton school is celebrating after another year of record A-level success as students look to the future after getting their results.

Students at de Ferrers Academy, in St Mary's Drive, have had a successful year as the A-level average point score has increased, particularly for the academic subjects, with excellent results in art, chemistry, geography, PE and physics, and a wide range of subjects performing in the top 25 per cent nationally for progress.

In the "facilitating" subjects, bosses at the school said a greater proportion of students achieved AAB grades and there were a number achieving multiple A* grades.

As a result, more students than every before have achieved their first choice places at university.

Head teacher Nick Holmes said: "I am delighted by the results this year. I thought it would be hard to do better than last year but this cohort of students have done it again and achieved better A-levels at the academy."

Students with the highest grades were invited in to the school early to open their results with their parents and teachers.

Kira Rai, of Furrows Drive, Burton, achieved an A for biology and maths and an A* for PE. She is now heading to Loughborough University to study sports science.

The 18-year-old said: "It is crazy. I did not expect it. I did better than I thought I'd done. I am now excited about starting university and will be celebrating with my friends and family."

He said: "I am relieved to get the grades and they were not what I expected. They were in the ballpark of what I was predicted. I think I will be taking a long nap now. I think my parents are just happy that I got in to university but sad that I am going away. Starting university is a bit daunting."

Ashli Alex, of Forest Edge Way, Outwoods, is going to study medicine at Edinburgh University after achieving an A* in chemistry and As for maths, biology and physics.

The 18-year-old said: "It is just great. God really helped me and I would like to say so much thanks to my teachers as well. I am going to go home now to eat cake to celebrate. I am sort of ready to start university now as I now have the last thing I have been waiting for so I can start university with confidence.

"It feels great. I enjoyed coming in to the school to sit with everyone to get the results as it is the element of surprise."

"I am just excited about starting university as having the results takes a bit of the pressure off. I am more relieved than anything and can't wait to start."
