Sweet-toothed residents can look forward to the opening on the new Birds Bakery in Branston, tomorrow, July 11. The popular bakery offers customers to anything from chocolate éclairs to caramel doughnuts, to sausage rolls and, of course, bread in all shapes and sizes. This new store has been long awaited by locals eager to get their hands on the sweet treats.

The new store will open on the Branston Square retail park off Main Street after months of construction work.

Birds has moved into an empty unit next to charity shop Barnardo’s, near the Co-op, after refit work began on Wednesday, May 24.

The store will open for business at 8am ready to supply hungry customers with sausage cobs, egg custards and freshly made sandwiches, even boasting a seating area for visitors to enjoy their early morning snacks.

Ahead of the opening, head of retail, Mike Holling, said: “We’re really looking forward to seeing the local community come out to us when we open.

“A lot of hard work has gone into building the store, but we’re positive the people of Branston will enjoy it.”

More than £130,000 has been spent creating the new store that will be filled with the usually popular Birds treats, as well as a larger focus on takeaway menu items, such as sausage cobs.

Anyone keen to satisfy their sweet tooth is welcome at the opening, and the bakery is hoping for as many people as possible to join in the fun.

Birds recently introduced scotch eggs in 10 of their stores, as a trial to see what customers think, and residents are hoping they will be available in the Branston store. A few stores are also stocking steak and kidney and steak and Derbyshire ale pies.

History of Birds

Birds the Confectioners was founded by three brothers; Frank, Thomas and Reginald Bird in 1919 after they returned from fighting in the First World War when they bought a store in Derby. In the war years, the bakery was limited in the number of goods it could produce, due to strict rationing. These limits led to long queues outside the shops, as everyone tried to get their hands on their favourite treats.

The first caramel doughnut was introduced in 1988, and the popular treat is still going strong with more than 12,000 being sold every week.

The first Expresso store opened in the Eagle Centre, Derby in 1998 offering take away food. In 2015, Burton Expresso in High Street was refitted and the Expresso brand came to an end. The take away products proved to be so popular they are offered in any shop with an oven.
