M1 lorry fire cleared and road reopen

It is quiet on the roads around Burton at the moment, but a bit more on the news we brought you earlier about a lorry fire on the M1.

The road has now been completely reopened following the fire which closed all three lanes of the M1 northbound between junction 29a at Markham Lane for Markham Vale and Bolsover and junction 30 for the A616 and A6135 for Worksop and Sheffield South.

Severe delays are now cleared and traffic is easing.

Burton Jet garage and The Money Shop robbed by knife raiders

Staff at a Burton garage and a shop were robbed at knife point in two raids believed to have been carried out by the same gang over the weekend.

Employees at the Jet Petrol Station, in Stanton Road, and The Money Shop, in Station Street, in the town centre were robbed on Friday evening and Saturday afternoon respectively.

The first raid is said to have taken place at 8.40pm on Friday, July 21, at around at the Jet Petrol Station, in Stanton Road, Stapenhill. Two men allegedly entered the store and stole cigarettes and an amount of cash. One of the men was carrying a knife, said a police spokesman. The incident number is 817 of July 21.

Search for 1971 missing man continues...

Staffordshire Police have confirmed that the infamous body that was found beside the River Trent in 1971 is not that of missing man, John Henry Jones.

DNA testing has been completed and found to be a negative match with the man who went missing from Llangollen, Wales in November 1970.

The body was discovered in a shallow grave in Burton in March 1971 and a fresh appeal was made this year in June on BBC’s Crimewatch Roadshow.

Jordan Walsh and Adam Skidmore were sentenced to 11 years in jail

Two masked men who threw ammonia into their victims’ faces during an aggravated burglary involving a cannabis factory in Burton have been jailed for 11 years.

Jordan Walsh and Adam Skidmore threw the corrosive substance into the faces of two men who were cultivating a cannabis factory at an address in Goodman Street, Burton, before running off with an amount of the drug, a court has heard.

Duke of Gloucester coming to Burton tomorrow

Tomorrow, the Duke of Gloucester will be visiting Burton for to visit two of the towns emergency services centres, Queen’s Hospital and the community fire station.

The Duke will be heading to Queen’s Hospital on Belvedere Road to unveil a plaque dedicated to those who have donated their organs to help save the lives of others, commissioned by the Organ Donation Committee.

He will then be visiting and officially opening the new Burton Community Fire Station. The duke will be given a full tour of the new facilities at the centre and meet with firefighters and other members of the community.

Lorry fire on the M1

Three lanes are currently closed on the M1 causing severe delays due to recovery work after a lorry fire and fuel spillage on M1 northbound between junction 29a at Markham Lane for Markham Vale and Bolsover and junction 30 for the A616 and A6135 for Worksop and Sheffield South. The incident is causing congestion on M1 to down to junction 28 for the A38 Alfreton and Mansfield). The incident is causing delays of an hour, says traffic information website Inrix.

Plans to turn Wetmore Whistle into a mosque have been axed

Controversial plans to turn a once-popular music venue into a mosque and community centre have been axed over insufficient car parking, it has been revealed.

The Burton branch of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Association UK hoped to hold meetings, prayers, and religious ceremonies at the former Wetmore Whistle, in Wetmore Road, Burton, which has been closed for more than two years.

Men arrested in Burton will appear before magistrates today

Four people were arrested in Burton over the weekend following drugs operations by Staffordshire Police.

Kyle Price, 30, Ian Welcome, 49, Lynette Johnson, 31 and Dwayne Harmitt, 24, who are all believed to be from the West Midlands, will appear before magistrates in Cannock today.

Delays on the M1 after lorry fire

Part of the M1 northbound has been closed following a vehicle fire between junction 29a and 30 between Bolsover and Worksop.

The road has been closed since 10.30am while emergency services are working at the scene to extinguish the fire.

The congestion is backed up to junction 28, where commuters join the motorway from the A38.

Don't forget to claim free childcare for summer if you work

Derbyshire County Council is reminding parents that they can claim 15 hours of free childcare, taking the load of working families.

From September, this will be doubled to 30 hours for some families.

Boxing champion Anthony Joshua backs campaign

World Heavyweight Champion Anthony Joshua is supporting a campaign by Leicestershire Police to reduce the number of knives on our streets.

The #LivesNotKnives campaign was launched earlier this year in an attempt to reduce the number of knife attacks in the county.

Ram-raid at Derbyshire Carphone Warehouse store

A Carphone Warehouse in Derby has been ram-raided. Eye-witnesses have described seeing a “professional” gang ram-raid the mobile phone shop in Ashbourne Road in the early hours of this morning, Monday, July 24.

They say a car drove straight into the store before a gang got out and ransacked it.
