The closure of St Peter's Bridge has undoubtedly caused problems for motorists in Burton and our readers have certainly not kept quiet about the issues the congestion has caused over the past week.

On Twitter, Vic Hawkes said: "Burton is now a no-go area for traffic now they've closed the bridge. It's causing absolute chaos."

Roger Cookson said: "All this whingeing... the work has to be done so accept it and get on with life. Why not take the opportunity to get fit, walk or cycle to work. In three months you'll have lost weight and be a lot fitter. Take the positive and forget the negative."

Karen Whitehead took to Facebook to say: "A park and ride on the Stapenhill side of the bridge should have been organised ready for the closure, which would have eased congestion considerably, one bus could take at least 50 cars off the road."

Commenting on one of our posts, Tom Whyatt said: "I appreciate works like this need to be carried out but I can't understand why work isn't happening 24/7 to minimise the disruption. If vital work happens in other areas such as shopping centres, hospitals, police stations it is carried out at less busy times.

"The schools go back next week which is going to double the amount of traffic at peak times and in addition to this we're fast approaching the run up to Christmas. Very bad planning yet again."

"It's going to cause major issues if this is going to last three months... it may have only taken me a short period of time to pop in and out of town but in that time I saw four ambulances of which struggled to get through queues.... please people, think, we may be wanting to get to and from where we are going BUT these people might be out to save a life, let's try and make things as easy as possible for them," Laura Carr said.

Ade Guntripp took to Facebook to say: "The work on the bridge is structural, not just throwing a bit of tarmac about, that is why its shut. That is why you cannot drive on one bit leaving another lane out of use ...people don't seem to get this fact."

Matt Holman said: "All nearby roadworks will be completed before the closure - except in the lanes near drake low. With horrendous traffic lights giving 10 seconds to go then sit still for five minutes. I'm not even exaggerating."

Abu Isa Bashir said: "What is wrong with people? Complain about potholes and crappy roads, when they decide to fix them people still complain!"

Leah Wilcox said: "Why didn't they start this before the kids broke up for summer? It would of made more sense as there's less traffic about."

St Peter's Bridge rundown

Staff at the Council say the work at St Peter's Bridge is absolutely necessary as the bearings - which allow movement of the bridge as traffic travels over it - have worn and need replacing.

Patchy repair work would mean ongoing works sporadically over years, causing significant disruption and affecting the town's economy.

It is said that if work is not carried out, a weight limit would need to be introduced on St Peter's Bridge in 2019, with a full permanent closure in 2024.

There are no other major planned works taking place in Burton during the work taking place on the bridge.

Although the council cannot guarantee that unplanned emergency utility works will not happen, if they do the council will do "everything practically possible" to ensure they are completed as soon as possible.
