Staff at Burton Pupil Referral Unit, PRU, are celebrating after 92 per cent of pupils achieved both an English and maths qualification on the GCSE results day.

Unlike many other schools the referral unit, in Church Hill Street, Winshill, has received results for not only GCSE exams and BTEC awards, but also preparation for working life awards, Skills for Employment and Further Learning diplomas, and an Institute of the Motor Industry award in cycle maintenance.

Interim head of Burton PRU, Sarah Bamber, expressed how proud she is at what the pupils have achieved.

She said: "We're immensely proud of the progress our students have made. Students join the PRU for a variety of different reasons – often joining us midway through their GCSE studies.

"We want to celebrate the success of our students as they have worked hard to achieve these qualifications. We wish them all the best for the future."

Most of the school's Year 11 students have secured places on training courses or will be in full-time employment in September.

Other pupils will be attending Burton and South Derbyshire College to study catering and public services, and others will be doing vocational courses at Chameleon School of Construction.
