A Burton woman who is passionate about pugs is organising an event in the town dedicated to the playful pooch.

Susi Ludlow, 42, said she has a friend for life in her three-year-old pet pug Peggie and she is hoping to make some new friends, both dog and human with her Pug walk next month.

Mrs Ludlow, of King Street, said she was inspired to set up the event after seeing a number of similar get togethers across the Midlands.

She said: “I know there have been a few festivals and events dedicated to pugs and I think they are great, but sometimes they are just a bit too far away and it can be difficult travelling to the other side of the county with a dog in tow.

“I thought about doing something local and after setting up a Facebook page which was about pug stuff in general, including the recent dog poisonings, and I asked if anybody would be interested in coming along to an event and I was surprised to see so much interest, so I got the ball rolling.”

The mother-of-two said she only became a pug owner last year but she is “loving every minute.”

She said: “I have always loved pugs, they are so ugly that they are cute. That seems like a really horrible thing to say but it is true!

“Peggie is absolutely nuts and I think that all pugs are real clowns and such characters. My son is five and is really hyperactive but he has met his match in Peggie. They have an incredible bond and run each other ragged.”

The pug walk will be held at The Washlands, in Burton, on July 22

Mrs Ludlow decided to hold the pug walk at The Washlands, in Burton, as it is the perfect place for the pooches to “run riot.”

She said: “It will be a great place for a pug rumble and there will be more than 20 people coming, some of which will bring two or three pugs so it is going to be great fun.

“I hope it is a nice dry day so people can come along, have a chat and enjoy themselves. If it is successful I would love to make it a more regular event and maybe organise one every year.”

The event will be held at The Washlands, near St Peter’s Bridge, on Saturday, July 22. The free event will take place from 2pm until 4pm.

All you need to know about pugs…

Falling into the dog breed group of companion dogs, pugs tend to weigh around 14 to 18 pounds and often live for up to 15 years.

The pug's comical face, with deep wrinkles around big, dark eyes and a flat round face, can't help but make you smile and it is believed that the pug's name comes from the Latin word for "fist" because his face resembles a human fist.

Personality-wise, pugs are happy and affectionate, loyal and charming, playful and mischievous. They are very intelligent, however, they can be willful, which makes training challenging

Pugs can't tolerate high heat and humidity because of a short muzzle (air cools down when it passes through the noses of dogs with longer muzzles before entering the lungs). When your pug is outdoors, watch him carefully for signs of overheating. Pugs are definitely house dogs and should not be kept outdoors.

Despite their short coats, pugs shed a lot.

Pugs wheeze, snort and snore, loudly.

Because their eyes are so prominent, pugs are prone to eye injuries.

Pugs are greedy eaters and will overeat if given the chance. Since they gain weight easily, they can quickly become obese if food intake isn’t monitored carefully.

Pugs need human constant human companion. If you own a pug, expect him to follow you around in the house, sit in your lap, and want to sleep in bed with you.
