A man who failed to attend an assessment to test his dependency on cocaine has been jailed. He was among the latest people to have their cases dealt with at Southern Derbyshire Magistrates' Court:

Drugs case

A man has admitted failing to attend an assessment. Bradley Wood, 20, of Ferry Street, Stapenhill, admitted failing to attend an assessment to establish whether he was dependent or misused cocaine, in Burton, on April 24. He also admitted failing to attend court on July 10. He also admitted possession of an offensive weapon in a public place, namely a lock knife while in Victoria Road, Burton, on June 10.

He has been jailed for a total of six months due to his record of violence, a second offence of possession of a knife that he committed and his failure to comply with community orders imposed by the courts. He was also ordered to pay £115 victim surcharge.

Attack on woman

A man has admitted assault. Marek Wypych, 36, of Princess Street, Burton, indicated a plea of guilty to assaulting a woman by occasioning actual bodily harm in Burton on March 29. He has been made the subject of a 12-month community order which includes a rehabilitation activity requirement. He must also do 120 hours of unpaid work. He was ordered to pay £85 court costs and a £85 victim surcharge.

Assault case

A man has admitted assault. David Cliff, 48, of Hall Street, Church Gresley, admitted assaulting a woman in Church Gresley on June 24. He has been made the subject of a 12-month community order which includes an alcohol treatment requirement. He has also been fined £120 and ordered to pay £85 court costs and a £85 victim surcharge.

Trespass charge

A man has admitted a string of offences. James Jarvis, 25, of Alexandra Road, Swadlincote, indicated a plea of guilty to entering the YMCA Happy Homes shop as a trespasser, in Burton, on June 18 and stealing £588 in cash. He also admitted destroying a triple-glazed window worth £600 belonging to Washlands Sports and Social Club, in Burton, on June 24.

He also admitted driving in Meadow Road, Burton, without insurance and otherwise not in accordance with a licence, on June 24. He has been made the subject of a 12-month community order which includes a rehabilitation activity requirement. He was also ordered to carry out 140 hours unpaid work. He was ordered to pay £988 compensation, £85 court costs and a £85 victim surcharge.

Knife incident

A man has admitted possession of a blade. Jack Webster, 21, of no fixed address, admitted stealing two bottles of Peroni beer worth £5.25, from an address in Witham Close, Hilton, on April 6. He also indicated a plea of guilty to possession of a bladed hand-made implement in The Mease, Hilton, on April 12.

He admitted breaching a conditional discharge imposed by the courts and resisting a police officer in Hilton on April 11. He has been jailed for a total of 11 weeks because the offences were committed while he was subject to a suspended sentence order, the blade was specifically designed and could easily have been used to cause injury or fear, and he tried to significantly resist a police officer doing his job which could have resulted in more serious consequences, magistrates decided. He was also ordered to pay a £115 victim surcharge.
