Fire crews were called to a Stapenhill school earlier this week after a child’s jumper was believed to have been set on fire.

Staffordshire Fire and Rescue sent crews from Burton to River View Primary School, in Suffolk Road, at 10.25am on Monday, June 26.

According to a spokesman for the emergency service, it was reported that a child’s jumper had been set alight and no-one was harmed during the incident.

A Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service spokesman reminded children and adults of the dangers of playing with fire.

He said: “This incident could have easily been much more serious and it’s an ideal time to reiterate our Flames Aren’t Games message.

“We regularly work with schools and partners to educate children about the danger of playing with fire but we also need parents to explain the dangers.

“It really can be a case of life and death. In summer months and school holidays we often see an increase in deliberate secondary fires, with grassland and fires being set in public places.

“These incidents divert crews away from other incidents and could delay them in attending a life-threatening situation.”
