Temporary traffic lights at a busy Burton junction will remain in place until next week as engineers work to find the source of a gas leaks.

Vehicles in Union Street, Guild Street and Station Street are reporting delays as four-way traffic lights were put in place at the crossroads on Friday, July 14. It was originally reported that they will only be in place for four days but work is taking longer than expected and now it is not known how long the job will take.

Cadent (formerly National Grid Gas Distribution) is carrying out essential gas repair works and the firm said that they need to find the source of the leak before the road is returned to normal.

A spokesman for Cadent said: “Cadent, the local gas network, is working to repair several gas leaks on a gas pipe in Station Street, near the junction with Union Street and Guild Street. Engineers are in the process of tracing the exact source of the leaks and fixing them.

"We don’t know exactly how long it will take to complete the repairs but we are working to fix the leaks as soon as we can. The work is expected to continue early into next week.

"We are sorry for any inconvenience caused. However, for safety reasons it is important that we repair the pipe.”

Drivers will also face traffic misery across the town with roadworks and temporary traffic lights.

On the A38 northbound at the A5121 Branston Interchange, the roadworks will remain in place on the exit slip road until July 27. This will allow for work to be completed to upgrade the junction for a new housing development. In Tatenhill Lane, Tatenhill, after Branston Road and Dunstall Road, the road will remain closed until August 1 for the same development.

Water main work on the A5121 Derby Road northbound at B5018 Hawkins Lane, Princess Way and Wetmore Road will cause delays until July 30. There are temporary traffic lights near to Burton Albion Football Club.

It is planned to be the last day of temporary traffic lights in Rosliston Road, Stapenhill, at Saxon Street, today, Friday, July 21, as work is hoped to be completed on gas main work.

Roadworks in South Derbyshire

Those living in South Derbyshire will also not avoid the traffic queues with roadworks and temporary traffic lights across the area.

There are roadworks on the A514 Swadlincote Road at Frederick Street, in Swadlincote, with temporary traffic lights. They are set to be in place until July 26.

People in Overseal are also warned to expect delays for the foreseeable future on the A444 Burton Road. Electricity work will see one lane closed at Linton Road until September 4 and temporary traffic lights at Park Road until August 28.

In Bretby Road, Swadlincote, at the B5353 High Street, there will be temporary traffic lights until July 28 for gas main works. This will affect bus services four, eight, nine and 19.

Roadworks will cause delays in Hastings Road at Stanhope Road, in Swadlincote, until June 8, 2018, with temporary traffic lights in place.
