Traffic misery is set to continue for another week in Burton town centre as work continues to repair gas leaks.

The four-way temporary traffic lights at the junction of Union Street, Guild Street and Station Street will be in place for another week as engineers work to fix the problems with the gas works. Motorists have faced long queues since the lights were put in place at the crossroads on Friday, July 14.

It was originally reported that they would only be in place for four days but work has taken longer than expected and now the job will continue for at least another week.

Cadent (formerly National Grid Gas Distribution) is carrying out essential gas repair work and a spokesman for the firm said they have found and repaired some of the leaks.

A spokesman for Cadent said: “Cadent, the local gas network, is continuing to repair gas leaks on the gas mains in Station Road, near the junction with Union Street and Guild Street, Burton. Our engineers have identified and repaired some of the leaks.

“We are continuing with this work and aim to complete the rest of the repairs as soon as we can. The job is proving more complex than first thought and currently we anticipate the repair will not be complete until sometime late next week.

“We're sorry for the continued inconvenience but for safety reasons it’s vital that we complete all repairs to the gas pipe.”
