Our environment is precious and we should take every step necessary to protect it. Introducing “no-idling zones” outside schools, hospitals and care homes is bound to have a positive impact on our atmosphere in terms of cutting harmful air pollution.

Leaving a car running for just one minute produces enough exhaust emissions to fill 150 balloons – and these can contain dangerous chemicals. It would be the responsible thing to do for both the Earth and our health to ensure we don’t leave our cars running unnecessarily when out and about.

Burton Mail readers should be mindful that driving dramatically increases the level of co2 emitted into the atmosphere. Walking instead of driving not only helps the planet, it also saves on petrol money, it’s good exercise and it’s a good chance to get some fresh air.

Walking can often be quicker than driving. Although a 10 minute journey can only take two minutes in a car, motorists often don’t take into consideration the unavoidable extra time involved, such as road works or traffic delays.

There are plenty of beautiful routes in and around Burton and South Derbyshire on offer to enjoy a stroll instead of taking your car.
