A woman who died on the A38 near Burton was the subject of a restraining order against a 39-year-old man, a court heard.

Jonathan Allison had been with the woman in his vehicle on the carriageway in July this year when the incident happened.

He has now appeared at Stafford Crown Court by video link from prison when he pleaded not guilty to a charge of acting in breach of the restraining order.

The order was imposed by Humberside Magistrates' Court in April this year and said he should not have contact with Veronica Pugacioba.

At court Recorder Michael Elsom adjourned the case until September 8 for inquiries into Miss Pugacioba's death to be concluded.

The court heard that Allison had also been arrested in connection with Miss Pugacioba's death and a Staffordshire Police inquiry into the incident was continuing.

Paul Spratt, prosecuting, said that a coroner's file was expected to be submitted by police within the next few weeks.

He said police were investigating the history between the defendant and Miss Pugacioba and the events on the day and no other person was involved in the inquiry.

Mr Spratt said that when interviewed by police Allison had claimed that was only in breach of the order because contact was at Miss Pugacioba's request.

Allison, of Coltman Street, Hull, was remanded in custody.

Miss Pugacioba, who was from Lithuania, was struck on the carriageway of the A38 at 8.30pm on July 6 by a vehicle which was not the defendants. She was taken by air ambulance to hospital but died later.
