A pedestrian was left with a serious head injury after he was hit by a car in Burton town centre.

Motorist Kevin Wood, of Fairway, Branston, failed to see two pedestrians crossing the road in George Street towards Guild Street and hit them, causing one of them to suffer a head injury, a court has heard.

The 69-year-old has now admitted driving without due care and attention.

The court sitting at North Staffordshire Justice Centre in Newcastle-under-Lyme heard that at 6.45pm on November 17, Wood was driving a Citroen C3 along Station Street towards the junction with George Street. At this time two pedestrians were crossing the road in George Street towards Guild Street and had almost fully crossed the road.

The defendant turned right into George Street failing to see the pedestrians and as a result collided with a man, knocking him over and causing a serious head injury, which resulted in a prolonged stay in hospital, as well as ongoing medical problems.

The court was told that the road surface that days was in good condition though damp and wet and the visibility was good.

Wood was fined £413 and ordered to pay £85 court costs and a £41 victim surcharge.
His licence was also endorsed with six points.
