Burton golf clubs have extended a warm welcome to a BBC presenter after she asked "Where is Burton Albion?" live on air.

BBC breakfast presenter Naga Munchetty made the gaffe following an early-morning live draw that saw the Brewers picked to face Manchester United at Old Trafford in the next round of the Carabao Cup.

Naga asked the question "Where is Burton Albion?" on Thursday morning (August 24) after sports presenter Sally Nugent read out some of the competition's standout third-round ties.

After some laughter she added: "I'm sorry! Everyone from Burton Albion or who supports them is going to hate me!"

Her colleague then informed her of where the club is situated, saying: "Near Stoke-on-Trent? Burton-on-Trent, I'm being told in my ear."

Luckily, Naga, who is a keen golfer, quickly took to social media to apologise for her mistake and was inundated with offers to visit the town and suggestions of where she could play her next round.

Burton Albion Chairman Ben Robinson also responded to Naga Munchetty’s mistake, but luckily he saw the funny side.

He said: "Her first love is golf so it is totally understandable that she has not followed Burton Albion's fantastic journey.

"I quite often watch the BBC Breakfast programme and I met Dan Walker as a charity event a few years back and he goes to Sheffield Wednesday.

"I was watching one day and Naga was wearing this lovely outfit in our colours and I was going to ask where she got it from. It was amazing.

"We would be delighted to entertain her, show her the great facilities, what a special town Burton is and the many things it is famous for such as the National Brewery Centre, the National Forest, the National Memorial Arboretum and some great golf clubs.

"Let's hope the message gets through and she can take us up on the offer."

Philip Brown, club secretary at Burton-on-Trent Golf Club, in Ashby Road, said: "We would welcome Naga for a round of golf here at Burton-on Trent Golf Club.

"Established in 1894 we boast one of the premier golf courses in the Midlands having been designed by Harry Colt.

"The mature course offers a serious challenge for beginners to even the lowest handicappers like herself, with accuracy, course management and shot selection being critical to maintain a low score.

"Such is the standard of the course that we regularly hold Derbyshire county events and are proudly hosting two England golf competitions in the next two years.

"We would be more than willing to offer her a round of golf and a perfect pint of Pedigree afterwards."

Tom Storrar, golf manager at Branston Golf and Country Club, said the club was "renowned for being one of the finest golf clubs in the Midlands."

He said: "We have been welcoming women here for decades and it would be wonderful if Naga would be able to come and see us and perhaps play a round of golf with ladies from the Staffordshire County Ladies Club.

"She could come and have a bit of lunch in the stunning clubhouse with fantastic views across the River Trent."

The brewers will travel to Old Trafford in the week commencing September 18 for the third round of the competition - their second trip to the home of English football giants Manchester United following the famous FA Cup third-round replay in 2006.

Newsreader Naga, who also featured on last year's Strictly Come Dancing, soon changed her tune and it appears that she might be backing the Brewers in the future.

She tweeted the message: "Good luck @burtonalbionfc I'm sorry I didn't know about where the team was from! Will follow more closely xx"

Fill up on petrol Naga - here is how you can get there

If Naga does decide she fancies a trip to the Pirelli Stadium, she can follow these simple directions to get there in just under two hours.

Setting off from Salford Quays, where the BBC Breakfast show is based, Naga can get on to the M60 in Sale from The Quays, Chester Rd/A56 and Exit 7. After staying on that road for 17 minutes and driving from the M56 to Cheshire East, you should take the exit for A556/A56 from M56 before getting on the M6.

Follow the M6 to A500 before taking exit 16 from M6. After following the A500 to A50 in Blythe Bridge, drivers should follow the A50 to Derbyshire and take exit 4 from A50.

To finish up, follow the A38 to Derby Road/A5121 in Burton, where you will find the most glorious football stadium you have ever seen, right in the heart of our great town.

Caroline Kay’s guide to what Naga could do in Burton if she visited during October half term

BBC Breakfast presenter Naga Munchetty has wished the Brewers luck on Twitter and said she would 'follow more closely' after asking "where's Burton Albion?" during a segment on this morning's programme.

Wouldn’t it be great if she popped along to the town for a visit? If she stayed during October half term, I have come up with some excellent things for her to do.

Next moves to larger premises in the town on Tuesday, October 24 which would give Naga the perfect opportunity to shop around for some top-notch home furnishings – and maybe treat herself to some new togs while she’s staying in the town. If she doesn’t I am sure I will. Who doesn’t love a handbag from Next?

One of Burton’s leading amateur dramatic theatre groups, Burton Musical Theatre Company, is performing Whistle Down the Wind at the de Ferrers Academy, in Harehedge Lane, Horninglow during the half-term holiday. Starring some of the most talented entertainers in the area. The show takes place from Tuesday, October 24 until Saturday, October 28.

And if Naga fancies watching the show on opening night, she is more than welcome to join my mother and I. We won’t mind sharing our box of Maltesers!

Usually on a Wednesday evening I hang up my apron and ‘go out’ for tea. My other half, John, and I more often than not pop along to Jaipur’s, in Repton, for a curry.

We love this restaurant and would be more than happy for Naga to join us. We might even treat her to a quick drink beforehand at the Royal British Legion which is just over the road.

Although Burton’s Market Hall is open from Monday to Saturday, Thursday is traditionally market day in the town. Naga could pop along to check out the independent traders who run their businesses out of the historic building.

There is also an outdoor market and I am sure the John and Darren from the fruit and veg stall will make a fuss of her.

Friday I often meet up with friends at The Sump, in Winshill. Naga is more than welcome to come along and join my friends and I. As she is a sporty lady, I am sure she will be interested in our chats about crown green bowling. The pub also serves a great pint of Pedigree and she couldn’t pay a visit to Burton without tasting one of its greatest beers!

On Saturday, October 28 Naga could watch the mighty Brewers as they get are set for a home game against Ipswich Town.

I am sure Burton Albion chairman Ben Robinson would be more than happy to take the news presenter on a tour of the Pirelli Stadium before enjoying some pre-match hospitality and shouting on the Championship team.

Prior to the game, Naga could pop along to the Claymills Pumping Station, in Stretton, as one of its regular steaming weekends will be taking place on Saturday, October 28 and Sunday, October 29. The museum shows how things were done in yesteryear and will make us realise how lucky we are today with the evolution of sanitation.
