People living in Stretton are “concerned and shocked” following the death of a man, which is being treated as suspicious.

Staffordshire Police is appealing for witnesses to come forward who saw a disturbance in The Green, Stretton, at around 8pm on Tuesday, July 25, as part of the investigation into the death of a man in his 60s.

The death is being treated as suspicious and a 41-year-old man has been arrested, with police having extended time to keep him in custody for questioning until noon tomorrow, Tuesday, August 1.

Officers were called to a house in Main Street, Stretton, on Saturday, July 29, at around 8.15pm after concerns were raised about a man at the property. When police arrived they found his body inside the house.

A post-mortem examination is set to take place today, Monday, July 31. A police presence will remain in the Stretton area while investigations continue, a spokesman has said.

Following the death, councillors representing Stretton have said there is some concern in the village due to the lack of information available at the moment while the investigation is being carried out.

Len Milner, who represents Stretton on East Staffordshire Borough Council, said: “People in Stretton are a little bit concerned as we don’t know the facts and there is not much information. My wife did speak to one of the residents who was friends with the deceased and they are very upset about it but they do know what happened.

“Residents are concerned as anything like this is a devastating thing to happen but until we get more information there is not much people can say. I did see the police car outside of the flat but then I was out for the day so did not really see anything else.

“I did have people say they saw quite a few police cars around there at the time. There is a general concern in Stretton but I have not been directly approached by anyone with emails. The people living in the flats are very concerned and worried.”

Bernard Peters, who represents Stretton on Staffordshire County Council, said: “It is a shock and there is an element of concern about why this happened in Stretton. People at the minute are keen to find out what happened and to get information.

“I would urge any residents of Stretton, or Burton, who can offer information to the police to get in touch with them as soon as possible and I am sure they will keep the information confidential if they are asked. It is a worry and a concern that this man was going about and living a normal life and now this has happened.

“I think when there is an element of mystery surrounding a death then anxieties will prevail.”

Witnesses are asked to call 101, quoting incident number 771 of July 29.
